Stop the Destruction of Stone School Park!

Greenspace is being destroyed behind Stone School

The Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) has plans to create a large parking lot in the area behind Stone School. The proposed parking lot will encompass more than 50% of the green area of the park. Only a small field will remain. As the pictures show, construction has already begun. Only the quick and courageous actions of neighbor Kerry Peterson caused a halt to the construction activity. We must permanently halt this ill-advised project.

There is a large parking lot next door which sits empty during the week.

Ample parking next door

Ample parking next door

The Crossroads Community Baptist Church is next door to Stone School. For years, the AAPS has paid an annual fee to use the church lot during the week. This lot provides plenty of parking capacity for the needs of Stone School. Now the AAPS has decided that it should operate its own lot. The reason for the lot was cited in the Ann Arbor News on July 29, 2004 as "student liability concerns, particularly students parking elsewhere in the neighborhood". This is an odd justification given that the AAPS operates Community High with only a tiny lot. Undoubtedly the $10,000 annual rental fee is also a factor, but apparently the AAPS has not even discussed this issue with the church (AA News 7/29). Why destroy greenspace when there is ample parking within 50 feet? Should we tell the school children that the AAPS paves over park areas without even exploring alternatives?
More than half of the grass area will be lost
Remaining grass area

The grass area in the background is all that will remain

This proposed parking lot will consume a large part of the park. The park was not large to begin with, and only the grass area shown on the left will remain. There is perhaps enough space for a youth soccer game, but that is all. In the AA News, Superintendent George Fornero stated that "a large field immediatedly adjacent to the parking lot will remain", but this is quite a misrepresentation. Please, go see for yourself. Just as importantly, the whole park feel will be destroyed. It will become a parking lot with a modest grass field attached.

Furthermore, since Stone School was built as an elementary school, it seems only logical that the AAPS retain the option to use the building for this purpose in the future. Any future elementary school will need playing fields. The meager surface area behind the proposed lot will not be sufficient.

The AAPS has stated in the past that this space will be parkland available to the community

When Stone School elementary was closed in the mid-1980's, the AAPS announced that the playground and park area would remain available to the community. This was reiterated by an AAPS employee in the last year. Why was a major policy change made without any consultation with the community? Is this how the AAPS operates?

We need your help!

The AAPS has temporarily halted construction on the parking lot. There will be a meeting with the community at Stone School on Tuesday, August 3rd at 7:00 pm. Please come to this meeting and let the AAPS know that this parking lot is unacceptable. The AAPS needs to continue the parking arrangements with the Crossroads Community Baptist Church. Paving over park area is not the solution. The initial excavation must be leveled and replanted with grass seed. Nothing less will do.

You are also asked to discuss this issue with your neighbors and other friends. Ask them to attend the Tuesday meeting.

It's also possible to email Superintendent George Fornero and the Board of Education. Let them know where you stand! Here are the email addresses:
